Important changes to migration from July 2022

Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate) visa applicants in the Graduate Work stream applying between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023 (inclusive) will not be required to obtain a skills assessment in an eligible skilled occupation. This is a temporary concession allowing applicants who have studied for occupations that are not on the skills lists to continue residing and working in Australia for a further temporary period upon completion of their studies.

The Minister can extend the date if necessary.

Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate) visa - Replacement stream

This stream is targeting holders of a 485 visa who were unable to stay in Australia for the full period of their previous visa due to the COVID restrictions in force from 1 February 2020 to 14 December 2021. Current and former 485 visa holders may apply for a replacement visa of the same duration as their original visa only if they:

  • were outside Australia when the original SC 485 visa was granted and entered Australia on the original visa before 15 December 2021, departed Australia after this entry but before 15 December 2021 while holding the original visa, or

  • were in Australia when the original SC 485 visa was granted and were outside Australia at any time between 1 February 2020 and 14 December 2021 while holding the original visa.

The Replacement 485 visa allows secondary visa holders who were granted a dependent 485 visa to also be eligible for further stay of the same duration as their original visa if the primary visa holder is eligible for the replacement visa.

The application for a 485 replacement visa must be lodged prior to 1 January 2027 and is not available to people who are already on their second 485 visa in the Post-Study Work stream during the period of international travel restrictions; or to poeple who had another visa granted aftre their 485 visa or had visa cancelled, unless they requested a visa cancellation or the cancellation decision was set aside by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

The holders of a 485 visa who were required to live in regional areas for the grant of a second Post-Study Work 485 visa but their move to regional was disrupted by COVID restrictions, may now meet this requirement if they have studied on a student visa or if they are granted a Replacement 485 visa and for the duration of the replacement visa they live in a regional area.

Visa Application charges increase by 3% on 1 July 2022 in line with the previously forecast Consumer Price Index increase. The increases will be rounded to the closest $5.00

Australian Citizenship fees must be in currency and it cannot be paid in foreign currencies from 1 July 2022
